Successful Dublin Law Tour for QUB Students

Events4 years ago

Hunter Savage host the 2nd Dublin Law tour.
On Wednesday 26th September, 28 QUB Law Society undergraduate and Masters Students visited four top Dublin law firms; McCann FitzGerald, Pinsent Masons, Matheson and A&L Goodbody.  They were accompanied by Hunter Savage consultants Declan Frith and Áine Gilhooly. All of the students received invaluable information about the Dublin legal market and the commercial opportunities that exist via the various Graduate Trainee Programmes of each firm.
First stop was McCann FitzGerald, where, over a lovely breakfast the group learnt how to best tailor their applications for the firm’s graduate programs and internships. The students were then given a very insightful talk by our guest speaker and Partner of the firm, Karyn Harty (QUB Alumna). Karyn spoke about Artificial Intelligence and its future within corporate law. Afterwards, students got the chance to speak directly to the senior graduate recruitment team for hints and tips for their future applications whilst touring the office’s impressive facilities. Many thanks to Lisa McGoldrick and Kate Honan. A special thanks to Karyn Harty for your insight and hospitality.
Next stop was Pinsent Masons where the group were allowed to see the firm’s new office and were given a talk by the current team and how they hope to expand in the Dublin market. Students then enjoyed an interactive workshop with two of Pinsent Mason’s current trainees, who provided a true flavour of what life is like working for an international law firm, what it takes to be a successful trainee and gave great guidance on how to stand out as a candidate at application stage. A special thanks to Louise Wedick and a number of the Dublin lawyers, including; Andreas Carney, Karen Gallagher, Ciara Ruane, Gavin Hickey and Ruth Hennessy who all provided a briefing on their respective departments.
The third stop was at Matheson where students were treated to a fabulous lunch and networked with current trainees on the 6th floor of the office, overlooking splendid views of the docklands and the river Liffey. The students then sat in on a Q&A session with trainees and graduate recruitment of Matheson to understand what life is like there. The students were able to ask questions on the route to qualification in the republic of Ireland and what opportunities Matheson has at trainee level. Students then toured the office facilities which included an impressive gym facility and fully equipped library. Many thanks to Carmel Mallet and the whole team at Matheson for taking time out of their busy schedules to provide really useful information into the firm and being superb hosts.
The final stop was at A&L Goodbody where senior associate Darran Nangle spoke about Blockchain, its development and increasing importance within the corporate world as well as the firm’s reputable and responsive work in this field alongside their clients. Whilst touring the firm, the students were again given a talk by A&L Goodbody’s graduate recruitment team and their Trainee & Intern Programme Manager Clodagh Collier on the fantastic opportunities working for A&L Goodbody can provide for graduates. The busy day was finished off with drinks and canapes alongside the whole A&L Goodbody team, with students getting the chance to speak to professionals right up to senior associate level about the firm’s work and culture. A massive thank you to Nessa Kiely, Clodagh Collier, Darran Nangle and the whole team for your time.
Everyone had a full and fabulous day in Dublin, the hospitality was second to none! A special thank you again to all the companies for providing great goodie bags for all the students – they were enthusiastically received by all!
